Carpet is one of the most common materials used for flooring in commercial buildings. It’s economical, comfortable and can withstand wear and tear over time. However, it won’t last without the proper cleaning and maintenance. Learn all about how to take care of your commercial carpet flooring to ensure that looks good and lasts over time.

Cleaning Carpets

One of the biggest advantages of carpet flooring is that it hides dirt even in hightraffic areas. This, however, does not mean that it doesn’t need regular cleaning like other materials. Proper maintenance and cleaning not only promotes a healthy work environment, but it can helpprolong your floor’s life span. Doing so requires an effective, scheduled plan, instead of infrequent cleaning or only when there is a mess.

Vacuuming is the easiest, safest and most efficient way to clean your flooring. Plus, this process is chemical free. However, buying a cheap vacuum is a bad investment for many reasons. If you’re going to purchase a vacuum it should have the proper features, including:

  • Dual motors-one to loosen the soil and the other to pick up the dirt and particles
  • Rotating brush-preferred to loosen soil over beating brushes, which can be damaging
  • Bags that fill from the top-so as not to add to the load on the vacuum motor
  • Replaceable bags-to reduce overfilling and creating an even bigger mess

Cleaning systems can also be helpful, but it’s important to choose a machine carefully. Hot water extraction models (also referred to as steam cleaning) slowly sprays both water and a carpet cleaning solution onto the floor. The machine will then vacuum it up to clean and remove debris and dirt and dump the water. Hint: Don’t overdo it on the cleaning solution. Using too much of a product can leave a residue and can become a health concern down the road. For people who have health concerns or allergies, there are non-toxic or hypo-allergenic cleaning solutions available. One of the small disadvantages of cleaning systems is that they need to stay off of for about 12 to 24 hours to dry, depending on the material type. Keep in mind that solely vacuuming does not count as cleaning. These two are processes that should both be done regularly to keep your carpets in tip top shape.

Effects of Neglecting Carpets

Just like most things, carpets need attention and care to last long (and look good). If you don’t regularly vacuum and clean your flooring, harmful substances like germs, dust and bacteria can get trapped underneath it. Also, letting it pile up will just make it that much more difficult when you do clean. Plus, carpets that aren’t regularly cleaned can even start to smell. Make sure to give your commercial carpet the attention it needs so that it will last.

Preventative Maintenance

The best way to preserve your commercial carpet is to ensure you’re performing regular, preventative maintenance. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Vacuum regularly and slowly to pick up any loose particles or debris (high-traffic areas once a day, moderate-traffic areas three times a week)
  • React to any spills immediately to prevent staining
  • Use protective mats at entrances to catch outside dirt and liquid
  • With the right knowledge, tools and maintenance, you can ensure that your commercial carpets stay clean and last long.
